Bringing Seniors to Food Testimonial
“When things were at their lowest, I was too proud to ask for help,” recalls Joan, an 82-year old resident at Crestwood Senior apartments in Northbrook and former U.S. marine. When Bob Caldwell from Hunger Resource Network/HungerFree Northbrook and Jill Brickman, from the Northfield Food Pantry, came to talk to the seniors about their services, I thought I’d give it a shot. Many had no idea that the resource was so close and accessible. Joan figured she should just do some paperwork and determine if she qualified, “why not”? Now she doesn’t worry about where her next meal will come from. She gets groceries from the pantry twice a month to supplement what she buys from the local Jewel-Osco. Joan still drives and is proud to say she’s been helping take residents to the grocery store and also to educate them about the food pantry.

When asked what her favorite part about the Northfield Food Pantry is, she said without hesitation and wearing a large smile, “the people, they are just so nice and willing to help”. She was surprised at the variety of foods available at the pantry from fresh fruit and bread to milk, butter, eggs and fresh meat”. She’s grateful for their service as well as of Hunger Free Northbrook and the North Suburban YMCA for their support in educating the seniors and transporting them to the food bank on a bi-monthly basis, through their effort, “Bring Seniors to Food”.
